How This Startup Took Flight

About
INRAT Exam Prep was founded by Dean and Jason (pictured below), two flying instructors grounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking for a new and better way to educate students under unprecedented circumstances and grow their reach, they founded INRAT Exam Prep.
They’ve built an online education platform helping student pilots across Canada pass the dreaded instrumentation (INRAT) exam. Developed for pilots, by pilots, it offers a friendly, relatable way to learn and sets pilots up for success as they enter the world of professional aviation.
Taking Flight

I would highly recommend Goodlawyer. It breaks down the barriers to purchasing legal service and creates value for its users with a user-friendly online platform and affordable rates for entrepreneurs.

The Challenge
As a new startup, their resources were limited and they faced plenty of challenges, legal and otherwise to get their new venture off the ground.
“Each of us operated our own sole proprietorship. It was challenging to confidently grow without the certainty that we were operating in the right legal framework for success. We were unsure as to whether a partnership or an incorporated entity would be a better way to move forward” explains Jason.
“What we did know was that we wanted to have all of our business operations under one umbrella, not only to consolidate our paperwork, but to enjoy some tax benefits. We also wanted to ensure that our course material was protected and wholly-owned by a registered entity.”
Searching for a lawyer wasn’t easy. The founders came across several options, but they were impossible to compare.
“I reached out and asked business owners within my network what their thoughts were on our options, all of them directed us to their own respective law firms,” recalls Jason, with frustration. Then, “I found it difficult to obtain a general understanding of the pricing model used by law firms. It was difficult to get a sense as to what our incorporation would cost and what we would end up getting.”
Like most new business owners, Jason and Dean were perplexed by the mysterious billing model and their inability to get transparent prices from the firms they contacted. Before rolling the dice on one of the many indistinct options, they decided to keep searching — and they came across Goodlawyer.
The Solution
Feeling slightly jaded with their previous legal interactions, they were skeptical that Goodlawyer would suit their needs and wanted to dip their toes before diving right in. Jason booked an Advice Session with a startup lawyer and patiently waited for his call.
“I engaged in a short 15-minute discovery call with a Good Lawyer which outlined our next steps and how the process would work.”
Feeling like they finally got a clear answer on how to structure their business, knowing how much it would cost, and trusting the Goodlawyer platform, they decided to incorporate INRAT Exam Prep and “from that point on it was fairly simple to get the incorporation completed.”
Looking back, Jason recalls:

I’d like to highlight how easy-to-use and interactive the Goodlawyer platform is. Booking a call with a lawyer was fluid and user-friendly. Once on the platform, it was super easy to connect with our lawyer via the messaging feature. Response times from lawyers were always super quick.

The Result
INRAT Exam Prep was able to restructure their company, combining two sole proprietorships into a single corporation suitable for rapid and sustainable growth. The arrangement formalized the crucial relationship between the two co-founders and set their company up with a legal foundation that could be built on for years to come. Knowing that their business was now legally rock-solid, the co-founders were able to get back to what they do best.
“The lawyer we worked with broke everything down into terms that were easy to understand and went through the documents and processes required by law.”
“As soon as we incorporated we had the time and space to push forward, focusing on growth-orientated areas of the business. We grew 210% in the month of March, consolidated all of our financials and business operations under one umbrella, and launched a new 6-week course.”
But beyond having their business set up for success, Jason emphasizes the mental toll these legal questions were having on him and Dean, and the positive impact Goodlawyer had on them.

Goodlawyer also allowed us to take a deep breath knowing we have met our legal obligations and can focus on the path to success... Much of our anxiety was alleviated after working with Goodlawyer.” Being a business owner is stressful enough — you shouldn’t have to worry if your company is built on a legal house-of-cards, too.
